Onboarding
Steps for new lab members and outside collaborators. Do the steps in order. Each step links to the page with the details.
Your First Week
For new lab members: students, volunteers and staff.
- Read the new personnel checklist. New Personnel ChecklistUT sign-in
- Get your lab keys and building access.
Ask Patrick Parker. He requests your lab keys from the Neuroscience Department office and your ProxID badge access to NHB. You need the badge to enter the building and to use the elevators after 6 pm.

Lock the door every time you leave the lab, even for a few minutes. The lab must stay locked when no one is in it.
Your Accounts
For new lab members. Dusten sets up your computer access.
Your supervisor or project lead asks Dusten to start your setup. Dusten can ask you for your UT EID, the email you want to use for Slack, and the Google email you want to use for the lab calendars.
- Sign in to the lab wiki once.
Go to wiki.khlab.link. Sign in with
EID@eid.utexas.edu, then sign out. Tell Dusten when you did this. Dusten can then add you to the lab's wiki group. - Accept the Slack invitation.
The invitation comes to the email you gave for Slack. Look in your spam folder if you do not see it.
- Add the two lab calendars.
You get one email for KH Lab - General and one for KH Lab - Out. Follow the link in each email to add the calendar.
- Open the lab's SharePoint site.
Shared lab documents go in Kristen Harris Lab on SharePoint. Sign in with your UT account.
- Connect to the file server.
Your file server account uses your UT EID. Use UT VPN when you are off campus. File Server Connection GuideUT sign-in
- If your work uses the GPU server, make an SSH key.
Send Dusten your public key. Never send the private key. Make an SSH key for the lab servers Then follow the GPU Connection GuideUT sign-in.
- If you get a lab computer, set up its backup.
CNS IT manages lab computers. Back up your work to your own home folder on the file server. Workstation backup guide
- Check the full IT list. User Checklist for IT ResourcesUT sign-in
You need UT VPN to reach the lab servers from off campus.
UT sign-inIf You Work with EM Images
Alignment, reconstruction and large image sets.
- If you will align a series with AlignEM-SWiFT, get a TACC account. Get your TACC account
Then follow AlignEM-SWiFT (image alignment). That guide is incomplete and has older steps. Before you start, ask the person who coordinates your alignment work which steps to use.
- Learn PyReconstruct. PyReconstruct user guide
Get the software from pyreconstruct.org.
- Prepare large image sets on the GPU server. Zarr tools on the GPU server (make-zarr and crop-zarr)
Outside Collaborators
You work with the lab from another lab or institution. You do not need the lab member steps above.
- Start with your lab contact.
Your lab contact is the lab member you work with. Your lab contact asks Dusten for the access you need. Dusten sets up collaborator access one project at a time.
- Accept the invitation to shared files.
The lab shares documents with you from its SharePoint site or from a UT Box folder. The invitation comes to your email. Follow it and complete the sign-in or identity check it asks for. Use the same email address each time.
- Open your project dashboard, if your project has one.
Some projects have a dashboard on the Lab Projects page. Your lab contact gives you its sign-in. Do not share it. Getting Access tells you what each lab page needs.
- Agree how to move large data sets.
Large image sets stay on the lab file server. Ask your lab contact before you send or download one. Dusten agrees the method with you.
- Get the lab's public software.
PyReconstruct and the lab's code on SynapseWeb on GitHub need no account.
Most links on this page go to the lab wiki. Many wiki pages need a UT sign-in.
